Acne can lower your self-esteem, but it does not have to as the “Blemish Killing King” is here to the save the day! Benzoyl Peroxide (BP), as the name suggests, is a peroxide that decomposes to release oxygen, which is lethal to P. Acnes1. This means that it has antibacterial properties, which will the kill the bacteria instead of just slowing it down. Thus, making it one of the most effective and best over-the-counter medications2

The effectiveness comes from its antibacterial properties, which will alter the bacteria’s DNA to essentially kill it3. So it will get rid of the active acne that is surfacing from your skin. Though, you should be aware that by doing so, you will experience some dryness depending on how dry your skin is originally. So it is important to moisturize your skin and only apply the medication in coin size amounts or less2. Thus, a pro-tip for using BP is to use the 2.5% as it is less irritating and just as effective as the 10%2. As well as, you can use it in combination with tea tree oil, which removes the dead cells and prevents scarring4. So, you can fight your blemishes away with this powerful anti-acne ingredient.

Although, it should be noted that you do not need to lather it onto your skin. Instead, you should just spot the 2.5-10% BP in the areas that you have a blemish. Otherwise, you will experience excessive dryness that may cause wrinkles, but that is if you use it improperly. So it is not as harmful as it is made to seem. The most that can occur is an allergic reaction, in which case you should discontinue using it. This allergic reaction is indicated by redness, hives or swelling of the face5. However, the product is safe to use because the FDA has placed it in “category 1”, which implies that it is not a human carcinogen6. They just recommend that it be used with sunscreen and you should avoid colored linens because it is a bleaching agent that can cause discoloration of cotton materials6

Nevertheless, benzoyl peroxide is a strong acne fighting ingredient that has its drawbacks in regards to allergic reactions and dryness. But if used correctly, it will help clear your skin and give you the ability to fight those blemishes away.
